Running past the Eagles
Last Friday, the Jesuit High School Varsity Football Team overcame the Pleasant Grove High School Eagles 35-20 at Sheldon High School.
In the first quarter, Pleasant Grove struck first to take a 7-0 lead over Jesuit.
At the start of second quarter, Jesuit scored with a 12 yard fade from quarterback Calvin Brownholtz ‘17 to wide receiver Evan Panson ‘18, evening the score.
With two minutes left in the second quarter, the Eagles threw for a 39 yard touchdown, making the score 14-7 at the half.
“At half we had a good team talk, and we wanted the ball in the running back’s hands more because they weren’t stopping our run game, so we stuck to the basics,” Calvin said.
Both coaches and players all had inspirational messages for the whole team going into the the second half.
“It never feels good to be losing in a game, but it’s what our team needed to wake up out of a ’fog’,” said Asst. Coach Jonathan Isaac. “What clicked for our team was an inspiring halftime speech from Coach Evans, followed by an emotionally honest response from Joe Hagopian ‘18, then Calvin Brownholtz.”
Ending the third quarter, running back Lorenzo Burkes ‘18 ran for a 46 yard touchdown, making the score Jesuit 21, Pleasant Grove 14.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Pleasant Grove scored a touchdown on a 25 yard run. Lorenzo scored again on a one yard touchdown plunge, set up by a 33 yard pass from Calvin to wide receiver Jonathon Amadi ‘17, putting Jesuit up 28-20.
Jesuit took over with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, and Lorenzo scored for a third and final time with a 42 yard touchdown. Jesuit won, 35-20.
Jesuit now has a record of 3-1 and looks to face Davis High School this Friday. The Davis Blue Devils are 1-3 after beating Elk Grove High School last week.
