With a winning streak on the line, Jesuit High School won their fourth consecutive game as they defeated Cosumnes Oaks High School 37-0.

Jesuit was favored to win after blowing out Franklin High School last week to improve their record to 3-2. Cosumnes Oaks entered the game with a 3-3 record after defeating Pleasant Grove High School.  

The Marauders received the kickoff and started with the ball on their own 10-yard line. From there, quarterback Hank Harvego ’19 connected with wide receiver Laiatu Latu ’19 for a 60-yard pass, followed by a 30-yard touchdown pass to tight end Connor McIntee ’19.

Cosumnes Oaks was forced to punt on its first possession, and Jesuit capitalized by scoring off of a 35-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kendric Bailey ’19.

Despite Jesuit’s early success with the passing game, they switched to an approach that involved more running as the game progressed. Hank threw the ball only 11 times, completing six passes.  

Jesuit utilized a ground attack led by running back Isaiah Rutherford ’19, who rushed for 86 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter. As a team, the Marauder’s backfield rushed for 169 yards.

Even with an amazing individual performance, Isaiah gives credit to his teammates for getting the win against a tough opponent.

“Our offensive line did a great job blocking for me, and the defensive line did a great job pressuring the quarterback,” said Isaiah.

Although Jesuit dominated on offense, it was their defense that made the difference. The Marauders had three sacks and eleven tackles for losses. Defensive back Patrick McIntee ’19 was a huge contributor to Jesuit’s success on defense as he had three tackles, including a sack.

“Our coaches had a great plan for us coming in on Monday, and we worked really hard in practice to make everything perfect,” said Patrick. “Come game time, we were prepared to shutdown their key players.

Jesuit’s Defensive Coordinator Jonathan Isaac was satisfied with the way his defense played.

“I think our defense did a really good job effort-wise,” said Isaac. “There were quite a few missed tackles on Friday night, but the effort to corral the ball carrier was apparent when you see seven or eight guys around the ball if the runner doesn’t go down.”

After this win, Jesuit’s record improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Delta League.

As the Marauders fight to keep their winning streak alive, fans can watch them play on the road this Friday, Oct. 5, against Elk Grove High School at EGHS.
