In his Senior year at Jesuit High School,  Head Varsity Basketball Coach Jon Rotz ‘92 played against NBA Hall of Famer Jason Kidd in the Norcal Championships. They lost that game to St. Joseph Notre Dame by five points.

“I think it is really cool to know that even though we didn’t come out on top of that game the only team that could beat us had a Hall of Famer on it,” Rotz said.

Coach Rotz played on the Jesuit High School Varsity Basketball Team all four years he attended Jesuit. Now he is in his second year as head coach for the varsity team at Jesuit.

Offensively, Coach Rotz wants to space the floor and attack the basket as aggressively as possible. Then they try to score in the key or they will kick it out and take an open shot.

“For defense we are going to press and trap a lot more,” Rotz said.

To prepare for big games, Coach Rotz emphasizes that his players need to work as hard as they can in practice. He thinks that working as a team is the best way to play basketball.

“I think working as a team brings everybody’s skill level up,” Rotz said.

Soon, Coach Rotz hopes to take his team to the Norcal Championships. Hopefully there isn’t a future Hall of Famer playing on the other team.
